Sunny morning in Longyearbyen, today's aim is to hike to Fuglefjellet through the beautiful Bjoerndalen.
Pretty damn North! |
We started the hike by crossing the river to reach the other side of the valley. The water was cold, the river deep and the stream strong.
Crossing the river was a lot of fun |
The sun and the clouds, dancing together on the cliffs make this place look surreal. We hike through the valley for a few hours, observing the arctic flora, herds of wild reindeers, and other birds. Lovely.
Oh Gaia... |

Beautiful flowers in Bjorndalen |
Stunning... |
As we assumed, this was the smoothest part of our journey. We move forward, until we reach a pathless cliff covered in loose stones. The way is steep, the atmosphere tense, we carefully choose our steps to avoid sliding down and steer clear of rocks falling from the cliff.
Hike to the top of Fuglefjella |
At the top of the Mountain, we halt for lunch and well deserved cookies. The view is breathtaking.
Astonishing view from Fuglefjella |
We must carry on, the plateau is vast but not wanting to rush, we stay behind. I keep reminding myself that I am in Spitsbergen, so far North, I have seen this land so often in my dreams, maybe ever since I read Pullman's Northern Lights 15 years or so ago.

Is it a Dream? |
And it was soon time for the journey back to the camp to start.
